I drink tea constantly, especially in the winter time. It’s warming, soothing and feels saturating for my tissues. Knowing it would be something tasty and nourishing, I asked my multi-gifted friend, dancer, fiber and ceramic artist, Body Talk practitioner and herbalist Danica Holoviak what was in her mug these days. “Fire Water,” was her immediate reply.
Juice of 1/3-1/2 of a lemon
Couple pinches of each (to your taste): cinnamon, turmeric, ginger, cardamom, cayenne
1/2 tsp molasses
1/2 tsp coconut oil or cultured ghee
Fill with hot water
I have been drinking this concoction for the past few weeks and it has been fabulously warming for my whole body. Plus, I believe it has helped me fight off a couple of colds that were threatening to take over. You might be surprised to see coconut oil or cultured ghee as one of the ingredients. I asked Danica to explain: “Everything in the body needs good quality fats to function. In the winter I always feel like I need a little extra. The extra oils make my skin feel more resilient to the cold, helps calm my nervous system that gets a little bit more hay-wiry when it’s cold, and helps my brain feel more efficient.” She described other benefits of high quality fats:
▪ Boosts energy
▪ Boosts brain function
▪ Improves immune function
▪ Supports endocrine function
▪ Improves blood glucose regulation
▪ Helps detox the body
▪ Reduces inflammation
▪ Supports healthy skin
▪ Aids in digestion and nutrient assimilation
▪ Coconut oil has vitamins K and E and iron
▪ Ghee is a rich source of Vit A and also contains Vit D
I, myself, am a big fan of adding coconut oil to my teas and ghee to my soups. I notice that I breathe easier and my tissues feel plumper and are not as dry. Danica quoted Rebecca Wood: “Quality fats, energetically speaking, lend a sense of ease, security and of being grounded.” We could all use some of that!
