While recently giving a Polarity Therapy session, I was struck by how each of us are unique and complex individuals and that finding answers to our own dilemmas takes first and foremost presence. By discovering and exploring our longings, emotions, histories, perceptions and habitual patterns, we map out our own being. With this self-awareness, we can then reach out for the resources that are right for us. At times we need someone to help us with this process.
I’ll give an example from my own life. Not long ago I was recovering from a severe weakening of my body. I was trying to do strengthening exercises, but to little avail. After months of attempting to become stronger and only getting frustrated, I reached out for a completely different resource: somatic sessions with one of my teachers, Susan Harper. These sessions drew me into a deep connection with my younger self and brought forth a love and compassion that I had not given myself before. This initiated an internal strengthening which continues today.
In both movement and bodywork sessions, I aim to be fully present with my clients: I observe their bodies, I listen to their stories, I sense the territory they live in. With my words I reflect the living map of their being, affirming who they are as individuals and discovering along with them the unique keys to their unique selves. My clients can then leave the session with a clearer vision of themselves, equipped with resources with which to navigate their lives.
